Objective Intervention Process

About The Resource Centre
When schools lack the provisions to help children with Learning Differences (LDs), the Resource Centre offers help and support to these children and their families. Resource Teachers assess and identify children's specific difficulties and develop a plan to build on their strengths and provide them with the strategies and tools to ease their difficulties. They work one-on-one with each child to improve his/her learning skills. They also work individually with parents to support their child and to teach him/her the skills s/he needs to succeed in school. All the activities of the BOLD program are carried out at the Resource Centre.

Objective
To help children with LDs by providing diagnosis and supportive education services through our Resource Centre. These services may supplement the LD programs in the child's school or be provided in their entirety at the Resource Centre when the child's schools doesn't provide any LD services.

Intervention Process
  1. Identification:
    • Parents are referred to or self-refer to our Resource Centre because of their child’s suspected or identified learning difficulties.
  2. Assessment (through Assessment Program):
    • With parental consent, the Assessment Program Psychologist evaluates the identified child's learning strengths and difficulties.
    • Based on the psychologists written report, the Resource Teacher completes an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for the child.
    • The Resource Teacher explains to the parents the identified difficulties, the strategies and tools she will provide to the child, and how these will help their child. The Resource Teacher also explains to parents how they can help their child.
  3. Intervention:
    • Resource Teachers work one-on-one with the child to enhance his/her strengths and to address identified difficulties. This is done by working to improve learning skills and strategies (based on the IEP) in memory, comprehension, sequencing, auditory and visual perception and discrimination, expression, spelling and hand-writing, language skills, eye-hand coordination, and social skills.
    • Sessions are held at the Resource Centre after school in the evenings.
    • The IEP is reviewed and modified at regular intervals.
  4. Communication:
    • At the mid-year and the year-end, Resource Teachers communicate with parents to review the child’s progress. The written summary includes a description of:
      • the child's strengths and needs at the start of the year
      • strategies and tools that were used (referring to the IEP)
      • successes and continuing challenges
      • recommendations for assessment, and services for the following year
    • Parents are welcome to arrange additional meetings with the Resource Teacher.
