ADD/ADHD Clinic

Objective What is ADD/ADHD? Intervention Process

About the ADD/ADHD Clinic
Doctors and psychologists at our clinic collaborate to assess children with attention components to their learning difficulties. Children identified with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are treated with some combination of medical intervention and services at the Resource Centre.

Objective
To help children with ADD/ADHD by providing diagnostic and supportive treatment at the ADD/ADHD clinic

What is ADD/ADHD?
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are the most commonly diagnosed disorders amongst children. The diagnosis is made more often for boys than for girls. It is estimated that 3-7% of children have ADD or ADHD. These children have average intelligence levels but struggle in the classroom because of their attentional or hyperactivity difficulties.

ADD and ADHD result from neurobiological and physical differences in the brain. Children with these challenges are often a handful at an early age and in need of constant supervision because of their: inattention, hyperactivity, or a combination thereof.

Intervention Process
  1. Identification:
    • Children are referred to our ADD/ADHD clinic by their schools, teachers and doctors. In some cases, families may self-refer.
  2. Assessment:
    • With parental consent, a physician does separate intakes with the child and the parent, and takes the child’s medical history.
    • The pediatrician conducts a general medical and neurological exam.
    • A rating scale is used to assess the level of attention difficulties for the student, and to confirm diagnosis for ADD/ADHD
  3. Intervention:
    • If the child is identified as having ADD/ADHD, the parents are given the option of providing medication for their child.
    • The doctor monitors the child monthly for the first few months of treatment and then less frequently as behavioral modification and medication programs are implemented with the support of the Resource Centre’s Resource Teachers.
The Resource Center also works in close association with our BOLD program.
